Tech Lead Introduction

Hello all! I am Patrick, the Tech Lead on Crazy Cat Lady! My responsibility in the team has been to get the game put together, and help the rest of the team to get sorted with the technological requirements of the project. I have been responsible for the large chunk of the code involved in the game. This involved creating many different systems for the gameplay.

The primary systems that I have put into the game include:

  • Character controls
  • Pickup/Putdown
  • Missions
  • Enemies
  • Dialogue
  • Breaking Objects
  • Knocking Objects

The systems that took the most work last semester were the Dialogue and Enemies, as I built these from the ground up as opposed to using in-built unity functions such as NavMesh.

As I am the one that has been putting the game together, I have worked quite closely with Jess (our design lead) to see how the playing should be designed to work with the player. For example, we had to discuss the exact speed that the player can go in each level. This is something that is important as it is a clash of technological requirements and the design of the play style. If the player goes too fast, the player is having fun, but they can move outside of the level. If they go too slow, then there is a bit of a boring play style, but there are no tech problems to be found in that. We also had to discuss whether design decisions were going to be viable with the amount of time we had compared to how long they were going to take to make.

I had to work quite a lot with Vanessa, our art lead a lot in the beginning of the game. This was so that we could figure out exactly how we could get the stylistic choices to fit in the game. This meant figuring out the sprite renderer working in the 3d space.
